Susie Green's Photographs- Greek Gods- Pandora
". After Prometheus had stolen fire from heaven and bestowed it upon mortals, Zeus commissioned the master artisan Hephaestus to create a woman to counteract this blessing. Hephaestus fashioned woman out of earth, and all the gods came forward to endow her with gifts. Finally he had Hermes deliver her to Epimetheus, the not-so-bright brother of Prometheus. Along with the other gifts Pandora was given a jar that she was forbidden to open. Its unknown contents plagued Pandora so much (she had been given curiosity along with everything else) that one day while Epimetheus was away she peeked into the vessel.Out swarmed all the calamities of mankind. Some said the vessel contained not evils but blessings, which would have been preserved for the human race had they not been lost through the opening of the jar out of curiosity. In any case, the result was intended to be the same.

Like "Aphrodite", this photo consists of two pictures combined by making paper negatives of both images onto a single print, then making another paper negative of this to return it to it positive. This has the effect of keeping the lighter colours on top. The butterflies are taken from another photograph I took a year earlier of a butterfly collection (at Glasgow Kelvingrove Museum). The butterflies have been used several times in my photos (see "Persephone, summer").
